Personalised Spaces: Incorporating Your Personality into Home Design

Furniture Pieces

First things first, let’s talk furniture. As an Interior Designer I fully appreciate the overwhelm here, there are so many styles out there and whilst it’s important to have things that connect to each other I’m not really a fan of the full matchy, matchy look either! A general rule is that you have 80% one style and the rest another. To put this into context you could have mostly new furniture in your lounge then throw in a vintage piece. It’s a good idea to think about the style of vintage and the style of new furniture you have chosen and how they connect. For example; if you’ve gone down the scandi route a good vintage pairing with this is a mid-century modern piece. If you have gone down the more traditional decor route then opting for a Victorian piece would work well here.

Custom furniture is also a good option here and built-ins are really popular now a days and I totally see why as they’re the perfect way to really utilise your space, hide the junk and show a bit of your personality by painting in a colour you love and adding accessories and art to them (if you have added shelves.) I also love how they can be seemlessly integrated into a room and look like they’ve always been there. I’m currently working on a media unit for a client and will be running skirting around the bottom and coving along the top to further integrate the piece into the room (top tip right there!)

Colour schemes

Colour is one of the most powerful tools in interior design. It can influence your mood, make a space feel larger or cozier, and reflect your personality. Don’t be afraid to experiment with colors that make you happy. Whether that’s bold brights, dark and moody hues or minimal neutrals – there really is not right and wrong on this. I’ve spoken about colour theory in my blog before so that’s definitely worth a read if you’re still finding it all a bit of a mystery! In that you’ll find tried and tested methods to selecting colours that suit you and your personality and actually work together.

When deciding on a colour scheme the most important things you should ask yourself are how you want to feel in the room and what times of day will the room be used and below I’ll tell you why...

How do you want to feel in a room? Does that sound a bit airy fairy??!! Probably. But is it important to know? Absolutely! I think most people would agree that they want their bedroom to feel calm and relaxing. Now, and this isn’t the same for everyone, but usually people find muted and softer colours more relaxing but to decide for yourself grab a paint chart, open it up and think calm and see which colours that is for you. It’s different for everyone but blues, greens and soft neutrals come up a lot!

When will you use that room? Some are more obvious than others, but lounges are a good example here. If you have a separate lounge to other living areas in the house chances are you spend mainly evenings in there so what could be better than creating a cosy sanctuary with deep rich tones and textures.

Personalised accessories

Accessories are like the jewelery of your home. They add character and charm. Think about incorporating items that tell your story – family photos, travel souvenirs, or even DIY projects. When selecting accessories, it is important that they work with the room so choose colours that compliment and are in an array of sizes – scale is important here especially for shelf stying. It all sounds a bit strict when I say it’s good to select items that fit the colour scheme but realistically once you have a colours that really fit with you and your personality you will naturally gravitate to pieces and accessories that fit with that anyway!

Consider creating a gallery wall with a mix of family portraits and artwork collected from your travels and don’t forget the frames! I tend to like a bit of embellishment on a frame be it a sneaky bobbin or a shock of colour picked from one of the colours in the art. I’m a huge believer that good framing can make or break your scheme so definitely consider this when creating your gallery wall.

Art that speaks to you

Art is a wonderful way to express your personality. Whether you prefer contemporary pieces, classic paintings, or quirky prints, your choice of art can set the tone for your entire home. I get it, art is a personal thing and what’s fabulous to one is really not for someone else. I’m a great lover of portrait art and having faces about my house plus for some reason they’re all wearing stripes but I didn’t plan that! My point being find things that you love and you won’t get bored of it.

Consider commissioning a local artist to create a piece that tells your story or look for vintage artwork that resonates with you. Art isn’t just for the living room – I do love art in a kitchen or bathroom for example. I’ve spoken about this before but this is a great way to make kitchens less kitcheny – meaning that the kitchen isn’t just a run of endless cupboards and becomes part of the home which, I think in terms of good Interior Design is especially important in open plan spaces so get that art up in the kitchen and, if you can, make space for a dash of open shelving.

A landing is a good place for a gallery wall.
